Petition launched to save Chesham High Street
At Buckinghamshire Council, the Conservative leadership is trying to sneak through permanent changes that will change the face of Chesham forever. We are standing up to stop them—but we need your help.
Right now, the Council is rushing through a three-week consultation to make their "experimental" traffic changes permanent. If we don't act before the February 16th deadline, we risk losing our pedestrian-friendly town centre for good.
What’s At Stake?
We believe Chesham should be a place for people, not just a bypass for cars. The Council’s plans would force through three major changes that we believe will devastate our High Street:
- Reopening Market Square to Cars: We want to keep Market Square a safe, pedestrian-friendly space for our community. The Council wants to turn it into a shortcut for vehicles.
- Two-Way Traffic on the High Street: Reintroducing two-way traffic will cause gridlock, spike local pollution levels, and put pedestrians—especially children and the elderly—at risk.
- A "Tax" on Local Events: The Council is introducing astronomical charges of up to £2,100 for local events. We believe these "event taxes" will strangle the lifeblood of our town’s community groups and festivals.
Why We’re Standing Up
We’ve heard from countless residents who feel that Buckinghamshire Council simply isn't listening. By using an "Experimental" Traffic Order (ETRO), they are trying to bypass the usual scrutiny and push these changes through the back door.
We are demanding a stop to this. We want a Chesham that is vibrant, safe, and open for community events—not a town choked by traffic and burdened by unfair fees.
