Amersham and Chesham Welcome New Civic Leaders

Mayors of Chesham & Amersham

May marks the start of the new municipal year, bringing fresh civic leadership to our twin towns. We are delighted to celebrate the appointment of our local colleagues to the historic roles of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Amersham and Chesham.

While these positions are strictly non-political and exist to serve every single resident regardless of politics, we want to take a moment to congratulate them on their election by their fellow councillors and share a bit more about the local champions stepping into the roles for 2026/27.

Amersham: Championing Deep Community Spirit

In Amersham, Councillor Martin Day has accepted the chains of office to serve as the new Town Mayor.

Cllr Day’s family ties to Amersham stretch back to his father, who was evacuated to the town during the Second World War. He is incredibly passionate about the thriving community spirit that binds Old Amersham, Amersham-on-the-Hill, and the surrounding area together. He plans to spend his term elevating the many inspiring local organisations and volunteer initiatives driving the town forward.

Working alongside him is Councillor Kelly Thornton, elected as Deputy Mayor. Born and raised in Amersham, Cllr Thornton is dedicated to ensuring the town remains a safe, welcoming, and friendly place for residents of all generations.

Chesham: A Life’s Calling in Public Service

In Chesham, Councillor Parveiz Aslam MBE has been elected as the new Town Mayor.

A resident of Chesham for over forty years and a dedicated former science teacher, Cllr Aslam has spent decades supporting thousands of young people in our local area. As Mayor, his focus for the year ahead is simple yet vital: to listen to, support, and celebrate the incredible volunteers, community groups, and independent businesses that make Chesham so special.

Supporting him as Deputy Mayor is Councillor Frances Kneller, who brings her extensive experience and deep commitment to local facilities, community wellbeing, and the preservation of our town's unique character.

Supporting Our Towns

The roles of Mayor and Deputy Mayor are about unity, community service, and representing the very best of our towns at civic events and charity fundraisers. We know that Parveiz, Martin, Frances, and Kelly will serve with the utmost dedication, fairness, and pride over the next twelve months.

You can find out more about upcoming civic events, council meetings, or how to invite the new Mayors to support your local community group or charity by visiting either Amersham Town Council (www.amersham-tc.gov.uk) or Chesham Town Council (www.chesham.gov.uk).
