About Time! Work starts on Chesham Subway
After four long years of neglect, work is finally starting to fix, clean, and reopen the flooded St Mary’s Way subway.
For years, families and elderly residents have been forced to brave the busy dual carriageway above because this vital link was left under water. While former Conservative councillors sat on their hands—even suggesting the absurd expense of filling it in completely. The Lib Dem-run Town Council has relentlessly pressured Buckinghamshire Council for a real fix since being elected last year.
That pressure has worked. This week, contractors will arrive to install brand-new, high-capacity pumps and give the underpass a thorough deep clean.
What You Need to Know: 2nd – 8th June
To allow heavy machinery onto the site safely, there will be a temporary lane closure on St Mary’s Way from 2nd June to 8th June. Please allow extra time for town centre journeys.
The recovery plan will happen in three stages:
- Water Clearance: Pumping out the stagnant water that has blocked access for years.
- Deep Clean: Scrubbing away years of built-up silt and debris, alongside a full check of the street lighting.
- Pump Upgrade: Replacing broken machinery with modern pumps to keep the subway dry for the long term.
Delivering Results for Chesham
We refused to accept endless delays or watch public infrastructure get buried. This is a massive win for common sense and local taxpayers. Your Lib Dem team will be monitoring the site daily next week to ensure the work is completed as soon as possible and disruption is kept to a minimum.
